Acing the Interview in Style

In this digital age, landing your “dream job” takes much more than uploading your resume somewhere online and applying for hundreds of positions. Getting a foot in the door is important, but there’s one key aspect that stands above them all: nailing the interview.

When it comes to the job search, the job interview is one of the most difficult challenges you’ll have to face. If you want to maximize your chances of success and stand out from the rest of your competitors who are champing at the bit for the same position, here’s a few tips that may help you land the job.

Dress to impress
The job interview, much like any other new social interaction, strongly relies on the first impression. As soon as you walk into the interview room, the first thing your interviewer will see is what you’ve decided to wear for the occasion. Not only does your attire increase your perceived friendliness and trustworthiness, but it also speak volumes about your self-confidence. Your attire shouldn’t be too plain, but it shouldn’t scream “Look at me!” either. If you look good, you’re going to feel good and be more comfortable during the interview process.

The power of nonverbal communication
Surveys have shown that within the first five minutes of the interview, half of job interviewers have already sized up the candidate. Because you may have only a few minutes to make your best impression, body language is key. Always greet the interviewer with a firm handshake, and make sure you’re not slouching while sitting because that may insinuate that you’re a weak individual. While talking and listening, remember to look them in the eye. As mentioned before, it’s all about showing confidence.

What can you do for them?
A common mistake that many people make when interviewing is talking too much about themselves. The purpose of the interview is to prove that you can be valuable to the company, and that should always be your focus. What skills do you possess? Which of your personality traits can be beneficial to the team? What experience do you bring to the table? How can you be a solution to their problems? Prove to them your worth as an employee, and you’ll have done everything you could possibly do to land the job.
